I feel like this a fitting time to talk about the iPhone 5S, especially after the iPhone 12 dropped this week. Why talk about the 5S, you might ask? Well, the iPhone 5S was the best iPhone when launched until the iPhone X launched in 2017. And it happens to be square. Guess what else is square? The iPhone 12. Let’s get into it.
Before we begin, take into account that I’m not looking at the best iPhone to buy in 2020, as that would obviously be the iPhone 11 Pro, SE (2), or the iPhone 12. I am looking at the iPhone with the most groundbreaking features the day they launched. This is why the 5S is the best Classic iPhone.
Small and Thin
The iPhone 5S was the last flagship iPhone to be marketed thinnest ever, and is also the last small flagship Apple has made. This makes it one of the easiest iPhones to fit in a pocket. In a time where phones were marketed as thin and small, this was THE phone to find.

Even though the iPhone SE looked the exact same as the 5S in size, shape and looks, it’s lack of ‘special features’ makes this iPhone boring to me, as it was a slightly better iPhone 6 in a 5S shell.
Most Groundbreaking features in an iPhone (Before iPhone X)
The iPhone 5S was the most groundbreaking iPhone to launch before the iPhone X. Some people may disagree with this, saying the original iPhone cannot be beat, but to be honest, other than being a phone by Apple, there wasn’t a lot going for it (No App Store, no 3G).
Back to the 5S, of all it’s selling features, Touch ID was probably the biggest, if not the biggest feature. This marked a new era in iPhones, allowing users to use their thumb as a password, making iPhones safer than ever.
After Touch ID, the 5S had Dual Flash, more LTE bands than any phone in it’s time, a 64 bit processor, and finally, all iPhone 5S users would be able to access paid iWork apps, for free. This means that content creation on iPhone got way easier.
Oh, and I forgot about the fact that the 5S was the first space grey phone, which is the best thing Apple did until they discontinued the 5C.

Yes, I called iOS 12 modern, even though we have had two major iOS releases since! For those wondering what I call a modern iOS version, I mean a phone that can screen record, support most apps, and supports quick start. (So basically iOS 11 or later).

Because the iPhone 5S supports a modern version of iOS, I can safely say that it can be used as an acceptable backup phone.
Inspiration for future Apple Devices
Earlier, I dissed the iPhone SE for being a boring phone. In reality, however, it tells us something important, which is that the iPhone 5S was pretty darn good. How do we know this? Well first of all, Apple would never have chosen the 5S body for the iPhone SE if the 5S sucked. They would never sell a model. Imagine Apple announcing the iPhone SE with the plastic 5C case. EWW! Who would buy it!
